Do Adults Really Get Braces?
Absolutely. Many people did not get braces when they were young. Either their parents could not afford braces, or their teeth could not be straightened with the techniques of years ago. Now they have problems with their teeth and gums or they are just unhappy with their smile. Other people did have braces when they were young, but they did not wear their retainers until they stopped growing. The result is that their teeth are now a little bit crooked. Now they are unhappy with their smile so they get braces too.
Presently nearly all of our braces are being done on adult patients. It is quite a change from 20 years ago when dentists were generally only treating children.

Are there any age limits?

Are There Health Advantages To Adult Braces?
Yes. When your teeth are crooked, they are harder to clean and will wear unevenly. Your gums can get inflamed and your teeth hurt. Braces can prevent some gum problems and prevent tooth loss.
What does adult braces feel like?
Well, the beginning part of the treatment takes a bit of getting used to for adult patients. However, after treatment gets started, things are quite comfortable.
When you have your braces placed your mouth takes some time to get used to something new. This only lasts a few days and after this you’ll hardly notice them.
When we use gentle pressure to move your teeth it is completely normal to have a sensation that they are slightly loose. This is because the ligaments that hold your teeth in are being stretched a bit. Don’t worry when the braces come off this goes away entirely.
Other than that, braces will feel the same whether you get treatment when you are in your teens, or whether you get treatment when you are an adult.
Will I be stuck with a "metal mouth" look when I have braces?
Definitely not. Braces have changed a lot in the last 20 years and you do not have to get a metal mouth when you get braces. Cosmetic and Clear braces are really quite discrete.
Can I eat as normal or will the braces stain after eating?
Yes, you can eat most foods when wearing cosmetic braces. Sticky foods like toffee, should be avoided. Braces do tend to stain a little after wearing them. People who tend to like staining foods such as coffee, Indian food, red wine etc, sometimes have to cut down. When your braces are checked, we change all of the parts that stain and place fresh white ones.
Invisalign, the clear brace, can be removed for eating and therefore does not tend to stain at all and can be cleaned easily.
What will my family members think about my getting braces?
Most adults realize how important having straight teeth and a healthy smile is, and they will support your decision to take care of yourself. With alternatives like Clear Braces and Invisalign you will look great and be able participate in normal activities.
Who will perform the treatment for me?
The braces will be performed by a dentist trained in the 6 month braces technique. Dr Ghassan is not a specialist orthodontist and performs other treatments in addition to braces. If you are unsuitable for 6 month braces you may need to be referred to a specialist in orthodontics.

If you have a significant jaw malformation or your teeth bite very badly you may need to get extensive braces which take 2 years or more. If shorter term braces are not an option for you, we do refer you to a specialist orthodontist for this treatment
